A much-loved botanical, dandelion has a long history of use in global herbal practices. Naturalized all over the world, dandelion’s brilliant yellow flowers can be spotted growing along roadsides, lawns, and fields. Taraxacum officinale is a perennial herb with a bright yellow flower head made up of hundreds of individual tiny flowers. The plant has deeply toothed leaves that form a basal rosette and a thick taproot.

Dandelion is a bitter herb that has been used for centuries worldwide, including in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, and Western folk herbalism, and was even been mentioned by Arabian physicians from the tenth century. Many of these modalities consider the root to be energetically bitter, drying, and cooling. Dandelion was traditionally used in many wellness systems to support digestive and gastrointestinal health.* Additionally, dandelion was traditionally used to support liver health, and healthy urinary function, and has mild diuretic action.*

A prized wild edible, young dandelion greens are often added fresh to salads or sautéed as a leafy green. The bitter root is typically brewed as a decoction or macerated as a tincture for its wellness-supporting qualities. Dandelion works well with a variety of botanicals and is oftentimes found in a range of herbal formulations. It is not uncommon to see dandelion infused into herbal beers and wines and diversity of restorative tonics. Another popular way to take dandelion root is in capsule form.
